Most images of our Lord in the Garden are much closer to fiction than I believe was the reality. Our Lord was in so much anguish when he was in the garden that he sweat as it were great drops of blood. He wasn’t just upset, he was in the most intense agony that a man has ever faced on earth. In just a few short days, the sinless Son of God, who never even knew sin, would be made sin. Jesus did not want to experience such defilement, punishment, and abandonment from his Father, whom he was always in fellowship with, since eternity’s past. The weight really cannot be calculated. The inner darkness he struggled with. I don’t imagine there was little agony in this moment. I hope that this painting causes you to reflect upon the tremendous cost that our Lord paid for us to be saved.
